For me, the most comfortable way to hold the twiddler is with its keys pointing to my sagittal plane at the chest level, with elbow slightly bent, very similar to holding a bar of soap. In my left hand, with fingers resting on the middle column, I am looking at the edge between the back and the LLLL keys column.
More careful study reveals that a correctly flipped right hand chord map is NOT a naive mirror image of the left!
For example, in a left-handed BackSpice layout, BackSpace is assigned to R000 and Space assigned to L000. In English, we type from left to right. In a right-handed layout, one may want to keep the same locations for Space and BackSpace for the layout to stay coherent with the direction of the text.
The same logic applies to ()
, []
, {}
, <>
and arrow keys. Otherwise, one will end up with the parentheses on a layout reversed:
R M L
( ) left-hand
) ( "naive" mirror flip
( ) correct right-hand flip
dido now provides an easy way to convert between left-handed and right-handed layouts.
